We were excited to stop by one of our favorite wineries yesterday, Cedar Rose Vineyards. 🌹 They’re located in Millville and have been open to the public for about one year or so. They’ve been rooted in the New Jersey wine scene for much longer than that and have brought their wealth of experience to their own vineyard and winery. .
We opted to do a tasting and tried their:
-2017 Silica (50/50 Albariño and Viognier)
-2017 Cab Franc Rosé
-2017 Chambourcin Rosé
-2015 Samara (54/46 Blaufränkisch Cab Franc)
-2016 and 2017 Cab Franc’s side by side
-2017 Ashenfelter Cab Sauv (from nearby vineyard)
-2017 Estate Cab Sauv
-2016 Thundergust (33/33/34 Cab Franc, Chambourcin, Cab Sauv)
Their 2017 Chardonnay was the highlight from the whites we tasted. It was aged in stainless steel giving it vibrant fruit-forward notes. This wine was also stirred on the lees throughout the aging which helps give it a fuller body while keeping those fruit forward notes in tact. .
The highlights from the reds were the side by side comparisons of the 2016/2017 Cab Franc’s and the two 2017 Cab Sauv’s (Ashenfelter vineyard and estate grown). The 2016 Cab Franc is bold and spicy with a bite that makes it go well with a bold meal. The 2017 Franc had noticeably less tannins and was more easy going than its one year older counterpart. When comparing the two 2017 Cab Sauv’s, the Ashenfelter is from a nearby vineyard in East Vineland that is managed by the owners of Cedar Rose. This wine was smooth like velvet, making it a perfect red wine that can be enjoyed by itself. The 2017 Estate Cab Sauv was only grown a few miles away but has a completely different body and flavor profile. More fuller body and bold, the estate version would pair extremely well with a great steak or bold Italian meal. .
Have you been to Cedar Rose Vineyards? Strongly recommended to stop in and check out their beautiful location and great assortment of dry, estate-grown wines. 🍇🍷

I enjoyed this great blind tasting rocaille_duesseldorf last week.
🇩🇪 2017 Schäfer-Fröhlich Titan Riesling (91/100)
🇺🇸 2010 Dominus Estate (93/100)
🇺🇸 2013 Opus One (95/100)
🇨🇱 2014 Casa Lapostelle Clos Apalta (94/100)
🇫🇷 2010 Château Léoville Barton (96/100)
🇮🇹 2001 Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Riserva (93/100)
🇫🇷 1989 Château Montrose (flawed)
🇪🇸 1959 CVNE Viña Real Rioja Reserva Especial (94/100)
All wines were tasted blind and decanted by our host before serving.
We started in the afternoon with a nice 2017 Riesling called Titan from the Nahe region from Schäfer-Fröhlich. Great fresh notes, a nice acidity and a good way to reboot the palate.
The 2010 Dominus was showing all it’s power, strength and character - a great wine and enjoyable right now but imo this needs at least 8-10 more years to open up and show all its beauty.
The 2013 Opus was more accessible than the Dominus. Sure, still very young but it’s drinking perfectly now with some decanting time. Dark fruits, graphite, some menthol notes - great length.
2014 Clos Apalta, my second time trying this wine, not as bold and deep as the first two Californians but plenty great fruit notes and a nice structure make this really delicious and enjoyable. Seems to be already in a nice drinking window.
2010 Léoville Barton - my winner of the evening. With some decanting time this is perfect now. Great fine structure and a beautiful depth - super fine tannins for a 2010 vintage - this is beautiful now and will be for the next 30 years.
The 2001 Fontodi del Sorbo Chianti Classico was in a great shape. Elegant medium intense body with red fruits and some nice tertiary aromas. Really good stuff!
Unfortunately our next wine the 1989 Montrose was flawed.
Last bottle for me was a 1959 CVNE Rioja Reserva Especial which was in an extraordinary shape. Earth and dried fruit in the nose. Soft palate with lots of tobacco and leather notes - lacking a bit in complexity after all these years but still a pleasure to drink if you’re into aged Tempranillo.
Thanks guys for this amazing wine evening! Hopefully it wasn’t our last!
